August means Amoebas!

August means Amoebas!.

A 16-year-old is gravely ill after swimming in the St Johns River a week ago. Most long-time Central Florida residents know to avoid lakes during August due to the risk of an Naegleria fowleri amoebic infection during the late summer but few think of a river posing a risk. Generally our lakes are safe until a combination of unchlorinated water, hot weather and silt containing amoebas form a perfect storm of danger for swimmers and recreational lake activities. The only treatment is supportive and infection is generally fatal.
