Setting off illegal fireworks is a misdemeanor punishable with a fine up to $1,000, court costs and a year in jail. Maybe most people get away with breaking the law but not all do. Many years ago, while living in Winter Park, a neighbor I didn’t know fired some sort of firework into a crowd at the Altamonte Mall and seriously injured a young girl. I don’t remember the specifics now, but I recall the progress of his case through the legal system was a regular feature in the Orlando Sentinel. {It was known as the Sentinel Star at the time.}
